The green light was a symbol of GatsbyвЂ™s dream and attaining her would be completing his American Dream.вЂњOn week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city, between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains. The light being green resembles GatsbyвЂ™s dream, Daisy, and in order to win her back, he had to achieve a higher social standard and make enough money to get her attention. His main goal in life is to win back Daisy and for them to live prosperous and happily ever after. Gatsby believes that if he can somehow make Daisy fall in love with him, his life will become impeccable. It is a significant symbol because it represents GatsbyвЂ™s pursuit of the American Dream and hope for success. The green light is at the end of DaisyвЂ™s dock in East Egg. They also resemble the dishonesty of the people. The eyes peer down on the people who have totally deserted their spiritual values to pursue the American Dream and achieve wealth.

The people are not measured by their character but by how much money they are worth and have obtained. The eyes also symbolize the loss of religious values and the only goal everyone has in life is to become rich. They resemble God watching down on all of the sin the characters are committing throughout the book. Eckleburg are only a billboard with fading eyes that is constantly mentioned. All the rich people can think about is where they are going to venture off to or what expensive item are they going to spoil themselves with next. It represents the people who wildly pursued wealth, bitterly failed, while the rich people only care about themselves, and feel like the poor are irrelevant. The valley, a wasteland between West Egg and New York, is where the poor and socially washed up reside and barely make enough money to survive. The Valley of Ashes is a clear symbol to the pursuit of riches and the American Dream. All of these symbols describe a key element in the book and in which the author is trying to get across to the reader. I discovered three major symbols in the book: The Valley of Ashes, the green light on the end of the dock, and the eyes of Doctor T.J. Symbolism is a major factor to helping further understand The Great Gatsby.
